Abstract
Humans, social beings who interact to fulfil their social needs, must meet barriers. Especially in Indonesia, the cultures are so varied that intercultural communication is unavoidable. Indeed, differences in cultural values are inseparable from communication barriers. Therefore, students from Sumbawa who studied in Surakarta experienced intercultural communication barriers. This research aimed to observe the communication barriers of Sumbawa Students who studied in Surakarta. This research was descriptive-qualitative. The data was collected from 4 participants who are native Sumbawa that studied in the range semesters one to seven by interviewing. The research results showed that the participants experienced nine barriers. The barriers were physical, cultural, perceptional, motivational, experience, emotional, language, non-language, and competitional. The participants also made efforts to reduce the barriers until they could achieve their goals and adapt to the culture in Surakarta.
