Abstract
This research discusses offensive language found in The Hate U Give Movie. The aims of this research are 1) To identify the strategies of offensive language, based on the theory of linguistic impoliteness by Jonathan Culpeper, 2) To identify the function of the offensive language. This research was a descriptive qualitative approach by using the method of content analysis. The subjects of this research were all characters in The Hate U Give movie and the object was utterances containing a lot of offensive languages. This research used documentation as the data collection technique. The researcher refers to Culpeper (1996) to analyze the data. The result of this research is found 5 strategies of offensive language based on the Linguistic Impoliteness theory that was found in The Hate U Give movie. The percentage strategies are bald on record is 19%, positive strategy 20%, negative strategy is 31%, sarcasm or mock strategy is and withold strategy as the same 15%. The negative strategy is the dominant of the strategy is negative that get percentage 31%. And the researcher also found 4 functions of offensive language namely, to vent negative feelings 26%, to get power 36%, to face attack the hearer 12%, to entertain the others 26%. And most dominant of the function is to get power that was 36% of the percentage.
