Abstract
Conventional and non-biodegradable antibiotic implant preparations used to treat bone infections require a second surgery which can cause trauma and recurrent infections. Drug delivery systems with biodegradable polymers can blend into the body so no removal or re-surgery is required. This literature review will discuss the selection of biodegradable polymers that are able to deliver antibiotics to implant preparations and are able to repair bone tissue. The search for articles for the preparation of a literature review was carried out on the Sciencedirect database. Each polymer has its own advantages and disadvantages, so further research is needed, especially regarding the combination of various polymers or other additives that support bone repair and effective drug delivery. Collagen is a biodegradable polymer that has the potential for bone regeneration, in combination with hydroxyapatite capable of delivering and releasing vancomycin in a controlled manner..
