Abstract

Every teacher and parent certainly hopes to raise their students or children to be a good person with good character, strong enough in facing decadence that continues to occur in our modern society. In educational and parenting subject, the study of storytelling method has received considerable attention from many researchers and professional practitioners. The developmental research was performed to contribute more in practical problem of education, by developing “Interactive Islamic Moral Stories Book” as a media for character building through storytelling method. Present study demonstrates the findings that children love stories; storytelling makes it easy for parents and teachers to remind the moral message of the story told to the children; children want to imitate the good deeds and good figures presented in the story; in the other hand children want to avoid bad deeds or bad figures presented in the story; and children grasp moral messages easily through stories. Furthermore, the important key to perform good storytelling for children are intonation and visualization when telling a story. Therefore, in this developed media, two additional colors were used: green colored text as a hint of the use of different intonations when reading stories, and gray colored text as a guide used by body movements as a visualization. In conclusion, the addition of these two colors makes it easier for teachers and parents when telling stories in the books so that it is more interesting and memorable for children. Limitations and recommendations of the research were also revealed. Last but not least, an Islamic perspective review was also outlined in this study, as a meaningful indigenous approach. ---------------------------------- Keywords: character education media, storytelling method, developmental research, indigenous approach.
