Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the impact of changes and adaptation processes for universities to stakeholders. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strategy in establishing relationships with the mass media to continue to disseminate information to the public. This study aimed to determine the analysis of media relations on public relations of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in maintaining a positive image during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researcher used the theory of excellence. Qualitative descriptive method to obtain descriptive information according to the facts in the field. This study used a purposive sampling technique, where the researcher took samples as a source of information from the problems to be interviewed, the sampling technique with the criteria of being involved in media relations during the COVID-19 pandemic, knowing how media relations and public relations activities are carried out by UMS and knowing the relationship development strategy media relations conducted by UMS during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that UMS public relations used the four models in the theory of excellence. During the pandemic, limited activities also limited the application of different media relations. Two-way asymmetric and press agentry became models that undergo changes and adaptations so that some activities cannot be carried out by public relations. Meanwhile, the public information and two-way symmetric models were the models that continue to run optimally during the pandemic because UMS relied on technology in its implementation.
