Abstract

This article aims to explain how the concept of leadership of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and how it is implemented in ISTAC 1987-2002 which is intended as a place for the development of science. This study is a literature study that uses the primary sources of the author's original work that discusses leadership and other sources that tell how the leadership of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas when he was the Founder-Director of ISTAC 1987-2002. The concept of leadership of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas is based on the principle of justice in two forms. First, to oneself so as to form good character (ḥusn al-khulūq) and leadership competencies. Second, in the form of a response to something. The results of the research regarding the implementation of the concept of justice in the management of ISTAC are: 1) human resource management were respectful of experts, chose based on their expertise and authority and did not distinguish between mażhab and religious backgrounds; 2) in teaching materials, libraries, and publishing, respect for scientific works did not distinguish the background of mażhab, religion, and civilization and published books by paying attention to physical quality and substance to solve the problems of ummat; 3) on the facilities and infrastructure of the building and the interior was that the design reflected the purpose of education and connected to the spiritual aspect; 4) the curriculum design was to divide knowledge into two major divisions farḍ 'ayn and farḍ kifāyah.
