Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has put demands on government leaders to contain the spread of the virus. The leadership of regional heads in communicating their policies through the media has become public attention so that they can influence public views on the image of leaders being reported. The purpose of this study is to find out how the online media Kompas.com frames the news regarding the image of regional head leadership in handling COVID-19 in their region. This research uses Robert N. Entman's framing model analysis and uses the topic of image and leadership. Qualitative methods and descriptive approaches are used by researchers as analytical tools in research to describe narratively the media frame. This study involved four reports of regional heads in handling COVID-19 in their respective regions through a sampling technique in the form of purposive sampling with the criteria of reporting on anticipation of the spread of entering the region, the call for going home for Eid 2020, the policy of Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) and the vaccination process. The results showed that there was no significant difference by Kompas.com in constructing the leadership image of Anies Baswedan and Ridwan Kamil. The Kompas.com media frame regarding the news on the handling of COVID-19 in the DKI Jakarta area shows that Anies Baswedan is a leader who is responsive in dealing with problems, a controversial leader, a leader who is good in rhetoric and polite in speech. Meanwhile, the Kompas.com media frame regarding the news on the handling of COVID-19 in the West Java region shows that Ridwan Kamil is a humanist leader, a firm and democratic leader, has a participatory leadership style.
