Abstract

The development ofiinternet technology has now changed the lifestyle of the Indonesian people to be technology-based. The presence of internet technology facilitates people's work in many ways, and travel mobility is no exception. This development gave rise to a mode of transportation, namely online motorcycle taxis. Surakarta City is one of the cities that has a population that continues to increase in 2018, the population reached 517,887 people, an increase of 1,788 people from the previous year which was 516,102 people, this triggered the need for transportation services to increase. Several online motorcycle taxi communities in Surakarta City, in the form of Grab and Gojek, are active in the downtown area, precisely in Laweyan District, Serengan District, Pasar Kliwon District, Jebres District, and Banjarsari District. The online motorcycle taxi community in the city of Surakarta is already occupying bases on shop fronts, roadsides, and squares. In addition to the scarcity of job vacancies, not a few people become online motorcycle taxis as one of the jobs. The COVID-19 pandemic that is endemic in Indonesia will certainly have an impact on the socio- economic conditions ofionline motorcycle taxi drivers. This study aims to (1) describe the social and economic characteristics of online motorcycle taxi drivers in Surakarta, (2) analyze the driving factors for becoming an online motorcycle taxi driver in Surakarta, (3) examine the efforts ofionline motorcycle taxi drivers to face obstacles in their work, especially in the time of the covid-19 pandemic. The research method used in this study is the survey method as the basis of the research. Survey method is research that takes a sample from one population and uses a questionnaire as a means of collecting basic data. The samples taken were 100 respondents who were divided into 2 groups, namely Gojek and Grab with 50 respondents each. The results of this study are (1) online motorcycle taxi drivers in Surakarta City have a productive age of 20-34 years, most of them already have families and have an educational background of SMA/SMK/MA equivalent and have an income of <Rp 2,000,000 per month, (2) The increasing economic needs, and the unavailability of jobs that match the educational background are the main factors driving becoming an online motorcycle taxi driver in the city of Surakarta, (3) the strategy for driving an online motorcycle taxi in the city of Surakarta is to improve health protocols and change operating hours be night.
