Abstract

The main problem in employment lies in job opportunities. When employment opportunities are high, the unemployment will be low, which will have an impact on increasing economic growth. This study aimed to estimate the effect of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), Regency/City Minimum Wage (UMK), and invesment on labor demand in Central Java in 2017-2020 using panel data regression with Fixed Effects Model (FEM) approach. The results of this study indicated that GRDP, UMK, and invesment together were statistically proven to affect the demand for labor in Central Java. Meanwhile, individually, it was proven that GRDP had a positive effect on the demand for labor in Central Java, while UMK and invesment had no effect. The Central Java Provincial Government is expected to increase wages with the aim of improving people’s welfare which results in an increase in public consumption, so that additional labor is needed in the production process, and can absorb more workers. Not only that, local governments should conduct and direct invesments not only in capital-intensive industries, but also labor-intensive industries so that many workers can be absorbed.
