Abstract
Nodular cast iron is gray cast iron with a process of adding magnesium (Mg) or cerium (Ce) alloys to change the shape of the graphite flakes to become round. Flame hardening is a process of heat treatment on the surface of cast iron and followed by quenching which changes the austenite structure to martensite on the surface. This study aims to determine the effect of flame hardening on the surface hardness and microstructure of nodular cast iron. The flame hardening process is used using the progressive method. From the hardness test, the highest hardness value is 548.52 VHN and the depth of the flame hardening layer is 1.5 mm. In microstructure testing, it can be seen that the surface of the specimen is dominated by martensite and pearlite phases, then in the transition region there is a graphite phase in the form of lumps and pearlite. The phase in the area that is not exposed to flame hardening consists of graphite which is spherical in shape and surrounded by ferrite and has a pearlite matrix. The results showed that flame hardening can harden nodular cast iron specimens.
