Abstract
The Messiah film tells the story of the Dajjal in the holy book. Lifting a story about the re- sponse of the modern world that reacts when there is a figure who spreads messages through social media in the midst of the noise of fake news in society. This film is a thriller genre by Michael Petroni from the United States which airs on January 1, 2020 on Netflix. The emer- gence of Payam Golshiri in the midst of the Syrian upheaval and claims to be a message from God that provokes the trust of people around the world. This research is descriptive qualita- tive by col-lecting data through observations from the Messiah film series which consists of 10 episodes. The subject of this research is the film Messiah itself by looking at the scenes that contain commodification and semiotics. The purpose of doing this is to emphasize that there is a com-modification of religious symbols to attract public interest because of the con- troversy it causes and the denotative, connotative and mythical meanings contained in the Messiah film series. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method and is based on markers and signifi-ers at the level of denotation, connotation, myth. The results of the study show the representa-tion of commodification in the film industry. Where films with Is- lamic themes are commodifica-tion of religion that are produced in the form of popular cul- ture and become spectacle items so that they can be sold to the general public. In the film in- dustry, the economic aspect or profit motive becomes the dominant aspect compared to the religious aspect. Film is a very interest-ing entertainment industry, so the content it contains is also very decisive. Thus, this is an op-portunity for the film industry to present a presenta- tion in order to achieve the economic aspect or profit motive of a film.
