Abstract

One of the most common diseases found in individuals aged over 50 years or commonly called the elderly is Parkinson's disease. Usually, men are twice as likely to develop Parkinson's disease as women. Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the nervous system, disorders of the nerves experienced by sufferers result in several movement problems such as tremors. This study aims to design a prototype in the form of a stable spoon that can help overcome the problem of difficulty eating independently in patients by utilizing the MPU-6050 sensor. The research method uses an Arduino nano microcontroller and an MPU-6050 sensor as a control component and data input. The system works when the MPU-6050 as a sensor reads the user's hand movements, the sensor will send analog data to the Arduino nano microcontroller for data processing using a predetermined programming script. After data processing is complete, the processed data is sent to the two connected servos, namely servo roll and servo pitch to move and maintain the stability of the spoon position. The results showed that the stable spoon prototype was quite capable of stabilizing or balancing the position of the spoon and keeping food from spilling, it's just that due to the lack of maturity in the design of the tool, data retrieval was less than optimal because the MPU-6050 sensor holder was not good enough resulting in an error in sensor readings, but overall this stable spoon prototype can be a solution to help overcome the problem of difficulty eating independently in Parkinson's sufferers who experience tremors in their hands.
