Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of strengthening religious character and independence as well as to describe the obstacles to strengthening religious character and independence in PPKn learning in seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. The research method uses descriptive qualitative. Sources of data come from sources or informants, places or events, documentation or archives. The data collection technique used observation, interview and documentation techniques. The validity of the data using triangulation of sources and techniques. Data analysis using interactive model. The results of the study show: (1) the implementation of strengthening religious character and independence by the teacher through: (a) The teacher begins learning by praying, greeting and reading short letters. (b) The teacher asks the students to carry out worship. (c) The teacher manages the class so that students do not depend on others and actively participate in learning. (d) The teacher provides motivation so that students can do the given task. (2) Obstacles in strengthening the religious character and independence of students are: (a) Students in praying before and after learning do not read seriously. (b) Students are given the opportunity by the teacher but do not use the opportunity well. (c) Students still depend on others, lack confidence and are passive when learning. (d) Lack of motivation of students in doing assignments from the teacher. The implications that arise after the implementation of strengthening religious character and independence are a forum for teachers to shape the character of students who are religious, faith and devoted to God Almighty and have independence from their duties and responsibilities.
