Abstract
Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is a microstructure observation tool contained in a material. The surface of the workpiece or sample is scanned with electrons and reflected electron rays are then collected, after which it is displayed on a screen through a particular detector. Images on the screen are usually topological, morphological, and compositional information. This study was conducted to find out the microstructure of gray cast iron and nodular cast iron with backscattered electron detector (BSE) and the composition in it using SEM-EDS / EDX testing. Results from the tests showed that in gray cast iron there are phases of graph, perlite, and slight ferrite. In the graphite phase has an elemental composition that is C = 91.73, Fe = 4.70 %, O = 3.49 %, Si = 0.06 %, and S = 0.02 %. As for the perlite phase there are elements Fe = 75.32 %, C = 21.71 %, Si = 2.47 %, Ni = 0.36 %, Ti = 0.14 %. Then in nodular cast iron there are microstructures of graphite, perlite, and a little ferrite. The composition of the graphite phase of element C = 96.52 % became the most dominant element followed by the element Fe = 3.13 %, Cu = 0.09 %, Si = 0.15 %, and Ti = 0.05%. As for the perlite phase has an elemental composition, namely Fe = 61.10 %, C = 34.74%, Si = 2.23 %, Al = 1.41 %, Mn = 0.38 %, and Nb = 0.14 %. Based on the description, then both cast iron samples are perlytic cast iron with the main matrix is the perlite phase.
