Abstract

Background: The frequency of excessive consumption of fast food can cause an increase in calories stored in the body so that it can increase the BMI value. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, aged 18 years were overweight and more than 600 million people worldwide were obese. multifactorial factors such as heredity, environmental factors and inappropriate eating behavior. Environmental and behavioral factors make a huge contribution to obesity, its relation to people's lifestyles Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between fast food consumption and body mass index (BMI) in Nutrition Students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Methodology: This research was a survey research type that was observational using a cross sectional design. The sampling technique used non-probability purposive sampling technique with a sample of 51 students. Fast food consumption data were obtained using the Food Frequency Questionnaire-Semi Quantitative form. Data analysis used uji Chi-Square. BMI data collection was carried out directly by weighing with a weight scale and measuring height using a microtoa.. Results: Most of the respondents were female (74.5%), Respondents who rarely consume fast food have a Body Mass Index in the normal category of 58.8%, and most of the students who frequently consume fast food have a BMI in the normal category of 66.6%, while respondents who always consume fast food have a BMI in the normal category of 66.6%. body mass in the category of heavy fat as much as 56.2%. Conclusion: There was a correlation between fast food consumption and body mass index (BMI) in Boarding Housem Students in Nutritional Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta.
