Abstract
Background: The staple food of the majority of the Indonesian population is rice. Bangsri Village is one of the rice-producing villages with a wide area of rice fields in Karangpandan District, Karanganyar Regency. Rice farmers are constantly and directly exposed to health risks such as contact between workers and pesticides in order to avoid pest attacks and obtain good yields. Inappropriate use of pesticides and incomplete personal protective equipment (PPE) can cause health complaints to farmers. The high cases of skin diseases among farmers in Indonesia is one of the evidences of the impact of pesticide exposure on farmers. Purpose: This study aims to determine the description of subjective complaints of skin diseases in Bangsri Village, Karangpandan District, Karanganyar Regency. Methods: This type of research is a qualitative research with data collection techniques through online interviews via telephone. The informants of this study consisted of eight (8) main informants and one (1) triangulation informant obtained by purposive sampling technique. Results: seven (7) informants did not use the right pesticide dose, one (1) informant did not use PPE, nine (9) informants used masks, hats, and long sleeves, seven (7) informants had subjective complaints of skin disease due to exposure to pesticides, eight (8) informants handled subjective complaints of skin diseases by looking for clean water and soap, one (1) informant checked with a doctor. Conclusion: Incomplete use of PPE and pesticides that are not in accordance with the rules of use cause informants to experience subjective complaints of skin diseases.
