Abstract
Errors that are often made by students in solving mathematical problems occur because they are wrong in choosing and using procedures or completion steps. Using Newman's stages of completion to find out where the students went wrong in doing math problems. The purpose of this study was to describe the types of errors and to analyze the factors causing the errors of class VII J SMP N 1 Grogol students in solving problems of Higher Order Thinking Skills mathematics set material. This study uses a qualitative research type with a descriptive design. The subjects of this study were students of class VII J SMP N 1 Grogol. Data collection techniques using test and interview methods. The data analysis technique was carried out by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data using the triangulation method by comparing the results of student work with the results of interviews that have been conducted. The results showed that the types of errors that arise when students solve HOTS questions are: (1) misunderstanding the questions, which include errors in determining what is known and asked, not writing down what is known and asked. (2) problem transformation errors, which include errors in determining the formula to be used, and not writing down the formula in solving the problem. (3) process skill errors, which include students not knowing the procedures or steps that will be used to solve the problem, then students cannot perform the appropriate procedures or steps, and students make computational errors. (4) errors in writing answers, which include mistakes made previously, errors in writing the final conclusions from the results obtained, and not writing down the final conclusions from the results obtained. The factors that cause student errors are the lack of ability to understand and pay attention to questions, not getting used to solving HOTS questions, not being able to determine the formula that will be used to solve existing problems, rushing to solve problems because time is almost over, can't perform arithmetic operations correctly, and forget to write the conclusion at the end of the answer.
