Abstract

This study aims to describe the inner conflict of the main character in the novel "Three Venus" by Clara Ng and its implementation as a teaching material for Indonesian literature in high school (study of literary psychology). Data collection techniques were carried out using library, listening, and note-taking techniques. While the data analysis technique uses a semiotic reading model, namely heuristics and hermeneutics. The results of this study indicate that the theme in this novel is the twists and turns of women's lives with their own problems. There are three main characters, namely Emily, Juli, and Lies. The plot in this novel is also predictable, starting with the three of them having personal problems then swapping places and ending with a touching atmosphere, the three of them become good friends who understand each other. Clara Ng describes the setting of night, day and morning very clearly. The setting in this novel only revolves around the house of each of the main characters, occasionally the three main characters get out of their zone, as in Emily's point of view who is constantly in the office. The novel Tiga Venus uses hyperbole or exaggerated expressions, as well as simile or satire. The novel Tiga Venus also uses mixed language, many English inserts in this novel. The symbolism in Tiga Venus is found in the word Tiga Venus itself because there are three main characters who experience strange events due to shooting stars. Venus itself is interpreted as the eastern star. The irony in Tiga Venus is divided into two parts, namely dramatic irony and verbal irony. There are various inner conflicts that are felt by the three main characters in this novel. Emily's inner conflict is dominated by an approach-avoidance conflict. Emily's emotions often explode here, she often thinks about doing negative things but she also thinks about what the impact will be so she also thinks if she has to do positive things to avoid chaos. The inner conflict that Juli feels varies, Juli has felt that she is in a problem whose solution can be solved in a good way and some in a way that she thinks is not good. The more dominant inner conflict in Lies is the approach-avoidance conflict, Lies is often in a problem that makes him confused about choosing the right way to solve the problem. The analysis of inner conflict in the novel "Three Venus" by Clara Ng can be implemented as a literary teaching material in the form of Indonesian language modules in high school, in Basic Competence 3.8 Interpreting the author's view of life in the novel he reads and 4.8 Presenting the results of the interpretation of the author's views both verbally and in writing.
