Abstract

Instagram has become one of the biggest and most popular social media in society. Instagram has various features such as Instagram stories, filters, captions, hashtags, locations and various other features that support users to share their activities, one of which is beautiful hanging out activities. Beautiful hangouts are usually done in cafes, restaurants, and various other middle class places. This activity is usually done to get photos and videos that will be uploaded to Instagram to show off to followers. This study aims to determine the motives of 2014 Muhammadiyah University students related to the hang out activities they do and display on Instagram. The theory used in this research is CMC and society of spectacle. CMC assumes that message delivery is currently mediated by the computer. Meanwhile, in the society of spectacle, Guy Debord sees that today's society is filled with various kinds of shows and the media becomes a simple tool to show themselves. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data collection technique was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 6 informants by means of purposive sampling. In addition, the researcher also made observations and documentation on each informant's Instagram account. The results of this study state that beautiful hangout activities displayed on Instagram social media are to show where their social class is, gain self-existence and follow existing trends. Besides that, hanging out is also shown to reinforce the existence of oneself and identity for the millennial generation. This is supported by the choice of location, the visuals chosen for the photo, and the clothes worn by the subject.
