Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the things that a mother do when the child has tantrums, things that cause the child to become a tantrum and what the child does when they have tantrums. In other words, the purpose of this study is to find out the form of parenting patterns applied by a mother when experiencing tantrums in Down Syndrome children. This research method uses qualitative descriptive method with constructivism paradigm. The theory used in this study is Revised Family Communication Pattern Theory (RFCPT), which is a general theory that describes the types of family communication. The study also used Parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory (PAR) and Baumrind's Theory of Parenting Patterns as supporting theories. The subjects in this study were mothers who had Down Syndrome children and for the object of this study was the parenting pattern with their children with down syndrome special needs. Data sampling is done purposive sampling and to collect data using interviews and documentation. The result of the research is that parenting patterns provided by mothers emphasize more on the aspects of discipline, aspects of self-reliance and aspects of communication ability. That way parents hope that the child can be better in controlling their emotions and the child can be accepted in any community.
