Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe the instructional design of English teaching for Program Khusus at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta that includes about the syllabus used by the teacher, the learning objective of English teaching, the instructional materials used for teaching learning process, the teaching design applied in English teaching, such as teacher’s role, student’s role, classroom activities, classroom procedure, and the media used for English teaching, the evaluation, then strengths and weakness of instructional design of English teaching. The research was conducted in SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta from March 2016 to December 2016. It is qualitative research. The object of the research was the instructional design of English teaching for Program Khusus at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. The techniques of the collecting data in this research are using observation, interview, and documents. Data collection from the classroom activity and the interview will be analyzed using descriptive qualitative research. This research uses the triangulation technique to check between the respondent and information. Checking information between the respondent is used in the technique and method of the triangulation. While, the researcher is also compared the technique of collecting data with other kinds in the same points. The result of the research conducted an integrated syllabus those are grammatical syllabus, text based syllabus, and functional syllabus. The learning objective consisted of general and specific learning outcome. The instructional materials divided into printed and unprinted materials. There are three stages of classroom procedure, such exploration, elaboration, and confirmation. The classroom activities are oral repetition, identifying key word, answering question, role play, problem solving, silent reading, questioning, skimming and scanning activities, and free writing. Some media used are LCD, laptop, and tape recorder. The teacher’s role found by the researcher namely: motivator, guide, manager, explainer, and evaluator. The student’s roles are participant, listener, evaluator, and tutor for other learners. The model of evaluation are reviewing question, formative test, mid test, and summative test. The finding of this research imply that the instructional design of English teaching for Program Khusus at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta has been suitable with the theories of English teaching learning. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) The English teacher should deliver the materials in different method and approach to make the student more motivated and enthusiastic in the classroom to practice such as role play or group, (2) the education stakeholder to think seriously about how to improve instructional design quality to support the teaching learning process, (3) the next researcher completes this research and conducting in other school.
