Abstract

Background: WHO states that 83% of child deaths are caused by infectious diseases. Diseases caused by bacteria can cause skin infections, gastrointestinal infections, urinary tract infections, and respiratory infections. The used of antibacterial or antibiotics was one way to treat infectious diseases, but the used of synthetic antibacterials had several disadvantages, including high toxicity and the emergence of resistant bacteria. Breakthroughs that give rise to natural antibacterials as an alternative to synthetic antibacterials must be carried out. Purpose: To determine the effect of ethanol extract of garlic (Allium sativum) on the growth inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhosa in vitro. Methods: Experimental Laboratory research using post-test only control group design method. The research subjects were Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella typhosa bacteria. The research sample was 30 replicated cultures, divided into 5 groups, namely negative control group (aquades), positive control (amoxicilin), treatment with garlic extract 5%, 15%, 45% on the object of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria while the treatment on Salmonella typhosa bacteria ethanol extract onions by 37.5%, 75% and 100%. After grouping, mice were acclimatized for seven days. The bacteria were incubated for 24 hours at 370 C and measured the inhibition zone formed around the well using a caliper. The research data were analyzed statistically with computer software. Results: The results of the different test of Staphylococcus epidermidis growth inhibition obtained p value = 0.000. The results of the different test of Salmonella thyposa growth inhibition obtained p value = 0.000. Conclusion: Garlic (Allium sativum) ethanol extract has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella thyposa.
