Abstract
Background: The degenerative process or aging process is a process or period that will be experienced and passed by every human being and cannot be avoided. In the elderly usually experience some decreased ability and function of the body, one of which is a decrease in balance function, thereby increasing the risk of falling. In supporting body weight, foot arch and body mass index (BMI) of a person are important components in maintaining balance and are interrelated with each other. High BMI values and low arch (flatfoot) or high arch (C-shaped foot) can cause balance disorders because the relationship between the fore foot and mid foot is unstable, causing an increased risk of falling. Objective: This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between body mass index and foot arch on the risk of falling in the elderly. Method: This study uses the critical review method which uses a system analysis and evaluation of articles, journals and books. This study examines previous research on body mass index and foot arch and then identifies the Quartile (Q) type of articles using the Scimago Journal and Country Rank (SJR) search and reviewed using the PEDro scale. There are 11 items on the PEDro scale that are used to discuss BMI and foot shape on the risk of falling in the elderly. Result: Based on a critical review of 7 journals whose quality was reviewed using the PEDro scale, a total of 3 journals stated that there was a relationship between body mass index and the risk of falling, 3 other journals also stated that there was a relationship between the shape of the foot arch and the risk of falling in the elderly and 1 journal stated that the relationship between the two. Conclusion: The conclusion from the results of this study is that there is a relationship between body mass index values and foot arch parameters on the increased risk of falling in the elderly.
