Substation is one of the electrical systems that fungtion to transform electrical power to be distributed to consumers. In the operation of substation there are several very important equipment, namely transformers, so the transformer must be installed with protective equipment to minimize the occurrence of disturbances. The protection system plays am important role in the sustainability and security of substation in supplying energy. The protection system has the fungtion to protect the electric power system and the equipment itself from lightning surges and circuit surges. To maintain relibility and ensure proper functioning of the lightning arrester, it is necessary to carry out routine maintenance based on the procedure. Besides, the placement of the lightning arrester also affects arrester’s performance in protecting the equipment fro disturbances or overvoltages caused by lightning surges. The purpose of this study was to analyze the readiness and reability of the lightning arrester on 150 kV Mojosongo substation in protecting the equipment and to analyze its placement. In accordance with the arrester maintenance procedure, things that need to be tested include visually checking the insulator housing, measuring the grounding resistance, measuring the resistance between the electrode with the electrode and also measuring the distance of the lightning arrester to the transformer. Based on the research results, the calculation of the maximum distance between arrester and transformer is 22.48 meters, while based on the field measurment data, arrester 1 within 4 meters, while arrester 2 within 26.7 meters from the transformer. Arrester 1 is very good for protecting the transformer specifically, while arrester 2 is not good for protecting the transformer because it is still far above the maximum distance, but good for protecting the busbar / line.
