Abstract

Sustainable urban development requires various efforts to balance the carrying capacity of the urban environment. Green open space has an important role in urban structures. Fulfilling the need for green open space in Samarinda has not yet reached the target. Ideally, from the 717.4 sq km Samarinda area, which becomes Green Open Space reaches 30 percent. But there are now only 6 percent. The existence of a city park in Palaran District is very important, not only as a green open space but also to accommodate the recreational activities of the people of Palaran. In urban planning, green open space is often considered as a supporting element for the formation of a Smart City. In big cities, environmental problems are not easy to overcome, such as air, water and soil pollution. Education related to nature conservation is important to be carried out by the City Government. The people of Samarinda City need an education about nature conservation, especially for environmental pollution. Public green open space, apart from being a place to carry out community activities aimed at the public, is also a physical function, social and cultural activity, education, economy, and aesthetics. With the use of the Public Green Open Space area as an Educational Park for learning as a place to carry out environmental-based learning activities, understanding environmental characteristics, understanding environmental concepts in Samarinda City can make people aware of the importance of education for environmental sustainability for the community.
