Abstract
This study aims to determine the comparison of gravity die casting and gravity investment casting methods on the density, porosity, micro structure and hardness value of aluminum from used pistons. In this study, using 2 casting methods, namely gravity die casting and gravity investment casting with a pouring temperature of 750 ° C. Chemical composition testing using Emmision Spectrometry (ASTM E-1251). Porosity observations were carried out with macro photos using a digital microscope and compared the results of each variation in print temperature. Hardness testing uses the Rockwell hardness tester (ASTM E-384). Testing of the microstructure of the castings using a metallographic microscope (ASTM E3-11). The chemical composition test results show that this material contains the composition of (Al) 71.05%, (Si) 13.65%, (Cu) 7.178%, (Fe) 3.4508%, (Zn) 1.7870% and elements. other up to 100%, according to the ASTM 2 B-85 standard classified into Aluminum Al-Si (Aluminum - Silicon) A413.0. The results of the calculation of the density of the specimen from gravity die casting 2.6972 gr / cm3 and gravity investment casting 2.6764 gr / cm3. The result of porosity observation shows that the amount of porosity affects the density value. The results of the microstructure observation consisted of α (Al) and β (Si) phases. Beta phase granules (Si) in gravity investment casting appear to be larger and in less quantity. If on gravity die casting the beta phase granules look smaller and have a larger number. Large, the number and distribution of beta grains affect the price of hardness. The results of hardness testing with Gravity Investment casting have a hardness value of 86.84 HVN, gravity die casting has a hardness value of 119.76 HVN.
