Abstract

Nodular cast iron is a type of cast iron that contains round graphite, ferrite and pearlite. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the quenching process at temperature of 850 ⁰C with water and to continue the tempering process at temperature of 550 ⁰C with air on the microstructure, hardness and toughness of nodular cast iron. This research used the main material of FCD which was cut and prepared into several specimens and then carried out by SEM testing, hardness and impact on the RAW material specimens, after the quenching process and after the tempering process. The results showed that by carrying out the quenching process, the ferrite and pearlite phases were lost and martensite phase appear while after the tempering process will change the martensite phase into tempered martensite. Than the value of hardness measured by the Rockwell method increased by 133.17% after the quenching process, and decreased by 41.95% after the tempering process. Meanwhile, the toughness value (impact price) using the Charpy method decreased by 17.07% after the quenching process, and increased by 61.76% after the tempering process.
