Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease which is still a major problem in the world of health in Indonesia. Diabetes mellitus is commonly called the silent killer because this disease can affect all organs of the body and cause various kinds of complaints. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or eliminated by controlling risk factors. Lifestyle such as smoking can be a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study aim to explain the relationship between smoking behavior and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Surakarta. This type of research was observational with a case control approach. The sample of this study was 124, consisting of 62 case samples and 62 control samples selected using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out by interview using an instrument in the form of a questionnaire. The analysis in this study uses Chi Square. The results showed that there was no relationship between smoking habits, total cigarette consumption, smoking duration, and passive smoking with the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Surakarta City (p value> 0.05). Suggestions for the public, both with type 2 diabetes and those who do not, to change their lifestyle that has the risk of causing type 2 diabetes mellitus. Health agencies are expected to increase the promotion of type 2 diabetes to the public through counseling in health agencies. For further researchers, they can take male respondents because the majority of those who have smoking behavior are male or can conduct further research on other factors that influence the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
