Abstract

Indonesia has faced an increase cases of non-communicable diseases, and one of which is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that characterised by high blood glucose levels. This disease is a sillent killer and requires serious attention, especially in someone aged ≥45 years. Getting older will increase the risk of experiencing type 2 diabetes and the condition will deteriode if a diabetes mellitus patient experiences unmanageable stress. This study aims to see the relationship between age and stress with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the city of Surakarta. This type of research is observational with a case control approach. The research sample was taken from 124 samples, consisting of 62 case samples and 62 control samples using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out by interview using a structured questionnaire. The analysis of this study uses Chi Square Test. The results show that there is a relationship between age and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Surakarta (p-value = 0.006, OR = 4, 66 and CI = 1.606-13.542), which means that age ≥45 years has the risk of 4.66 times the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Meanwhile, there is no relationship between stress and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Surakarta (p-value = 0.857). Suggestions for people with type 2 diabetes and those who are not to continue to control DM, not just stress but still maintaining a healthy lifestyle and eating, doing physical activity, and routine health checks. Puskesmas are expected to increase promotional and preventive efforts as well as counseling, especially in posbindu amd prolanis programe to the community regarding the importance of controlling the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
