Abstract
Venezuela is facing an economic collapse due to hyperinflation. The crisis has been occuring since Nicolas Maduro succeed Hugo Caves as president in 2013. Until Nicolas Maduro was re-elected in the 2018 presidential election, Venezuela's economy continued to deteriorate. Nicolas Maduro was suspected of vote manipulation. It sparked a coup by the opposition, which has the backing of the United States, calling for Maduro to step down from his post as president of Venezuela. Considered the Venezuelan goverment couldn’t handle the crisis properly and manipulated, so that their reputation is threatened by the public. This study aims to determine what image repair strategies that Venezuelan goverment uses to facing the Venezuela crisis that published in online media Kompas.com and Tempo.co. This study uses Image Restoration Theory by Benoit. The methodology in this research is content analysis. Meanwhile, the population are all news articles in the period 23 January 2019 until 31 December 2019. The results of this study, Venezuelan Goverment uses various image repair strategy such as denial through simple denial and shifting the blame, evasion of responsibility through good intentions, reducing offensiveness through minimization and bolstering. and corrective action. The denial strategy through shifting the blame is the most widely used but it’s not effective for restoration his reputation if those accused of being responsible are proven not to have done anything wrong. The best strategy that must be taken is corrective action by trying to correct all the mistakes so that couldn’t happen again in the future.
