Abstract

This study aims to show how marine pollution is represented in Aquaman film by using qualitative approach with aiming sample data purposive sampling. The analysis is done by exploring the reality obtained through the symbols and signs displayed throughout the film through the approach of Charles Sanders Pierce's Semiotics Theory. The results of this study showed that Aquaman film shows scenes that represent marine pollution based on the categorization of marine pollution according to Government Regulation No. 19 of 1999 on Pollution Control and/or Marine Destruction. First, the entry or inclusion of living things, substances, energy, and or other components into the marine environment, is shown in mountainous scenes of garbage on the beach as well as conversations about urban waste and factories being dumped into the ocean resulting in global warming. Second, it causes the marine environment to no longer function, shown in scenes that project pollution of waste dumped into the sea, consumptively caught fish and any marine damage that threatens marine life. Third, it occurs as a result of human activities, displayed in a conversation where talking about the damage caused by humans will one day destroy themselves but before finally the land that is destroyed by the sea will be destroyed first, reinforced by another scene that mentions that the oceans are more than just the source of human life, but also the identity of human beings.
