Abstract

This study aims at determining the efforts, problems and solutions of Thai students in improving their writing skills. The objectives of the study are: (1) to investigate the problems and solutions faced by Thai Students in academic writing skill in English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, (2) to describe ways of Thai Students to improve their writing skills in English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The techniques of data collection include interview and Questionnaires. The data in this research are analyzed by data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion Miles and Huberman (1994). Based on analysis, it is found that there are four problems and Solutions to improve their writing skills. The problems include Thai student’s common problems in writing skill, Thai student’s difficulties in writing, Thai student’s writing habits and Lecturer’s manner in correcting errors. There are also found efforts in improving writing skills in class. Thai students do a lot of practice to improve their writing. Thai students improve their writing by asking and Thai students’ efforts to improve their writing by learning from social media. The research shows that Thai students are unskillful and low-experienced in English, especially writing skills because the students have lack basic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar though it has been a long time to learn since they started learning English.
