Abstract

Medium Carbon steel widely used in the manufacture of engine components such as shafts, gears and other engine components. To improve the mechanical properties of the steel it can be changed by providing quenching and tempering heat treatment. In this study, quenching was carried out with heat treatment at a temperature of 840 ° C for 60 minutes then followed by rapid cooling with water media and tempering was carried out at a temperature of 200 ° C and with variations in holding time of 10, 30, and 60 minutes then cooled slowly at room temperature. The results of the hardness test showed that the raw material hardness value was 42.5 HRC and 39.3 HRC after quenching. Then in the tempering process with a variation of the holding time of 10, 30, and 60 minutes, the hardness values were 42.3 HRC, 42.5 HRC, and 42.5 HRC, respectively. Thus, the variation in holding time does not significantly affect the hardness value of medium carbon steel and does not significantly change martensite to tempered martensite.
