Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of various carbon grain sizes to hardness and microstructure of ST 60 carbon steel in pack carburizing process. Pack carburizing process is commonly used to enhance surface hardness of steel. In this study, carbon grain sizes that were used consisted of mesh 80 (177 µm), 100 (149 µm), 120 (125 µm), and 140 (105 µm). Carburizing process was run in the temperature of 900°C with 1 hour holding time. The results showed that carbon size variation of mesh 80 (177 µm) had an average hardness value of 45 HRC. Mesh 100 (149 µm) had an average hardness value of 48.03 HRC. Mesh 120 (125 µm) and mesh 140 (105 µm) had an average hardness value of 51.1 HRC and 52.1 HRC respectively. The raw material has an average hardness value of 66.7 HRB. Thus, after carburizing, the raw material hardness has increased 267% - 389%. In conclusion, carbon grain size in pack carburizing process affects material hardness
