Abstract
Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is known as a metabolic disorder caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body unable to use the insulin it produces effectively. The excess secretion of glucagon by alpha cells and insulin which beta cells cannot produce or do not act effectively causes an increase in glucose levels in the blood (hyperglycemia). Administration of vitamin D increases insulin receptor gene transcription to reduce hyperglycemic rise by inducing pancreatic β cells. Objective: Analyze the relationship of vitamin D in reducing blood glucose levels in Diabetes Mellitus sufferers. Method: This study used a literature review study using articles sources published from 2015 to November 2020 in the PubMed and Science Direct databases using the keywords "vitamin d" OR "ergocalciferols" OR vitamin D AND "glucose" AND "diabetes mellitus". The data analysis was in the form of narrative sentences which began with the selection of articles that match the inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria and research relevance, which was then draw conclusions. Result: There were 7 articles reviewed from countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Taiwan. Clinical trials in several studies have shown that vitamin D plays a role in lowering blood glucose in patients with diabetes which significantly reduces HbA1c. Conclusion: Vitamin D plays a role in lowering blood glucose levels in Diabetes Mellitus sufferers.
