Abstract

Adolescence is a period when individuals experience development psychologically, physically, and change from childhood to adulthood based on their inability to control their emotions, resistance, and enjoy doing new things. One of the new things that teenagers want to know towards adulthood is smoking. Smoking is a health problem that is often encountered by smokers such as respiratory disease (cardiovascular), cancer, tumors, and low back pain. The more cigarettes smoked, the more cigarette chemicals (nicotine and carbon monoxide) increase in the body, thus blocking oxygen and transport of nutrients to the muscles, ligaments and intervertebral disk and there will be ischemia which can cause low back pain. Low back pain or low back pain is a major cause worldwide due to a factor of disability in the vertebral group, muscle stiffness or tension located above the inferior gluteal fold and below the costal margin of increased body mass, age, and smoking. This type of research is observational with a cross-sectional design, the sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The number of samples in this study were 31 respondents. The test results used the normality test, namely Saphiro Wilk, with a significant value of sig> 0.05, namely: 0.211 on the Oswestry scale for the assessment of low back pain. Whereas in the data results the value of the Brinkman scale for measurement of smoking and normality tests were normally distributed with a significant value <0.05, namely: 0.015. The results of the correlation data analysis between smoking and the incidence of low back pain using the Spearman rank test obtained a significant value of 0.002 <0.05, which means that there is a relationship between smoking and the incidence of low back pain.
