Abstract

The objectives of this study were: (1) To describe the implementation of strengthening character education through the school literacy culture at SMA Negeri 3 Surakarta. (2) Describe the obstacles in the implementation of strengthening character education through the school literacy culture at SMA Negeri 3 Surakarta. (3) Describe solutions in overcoming obstacles from the implementation of strengthening character education through the school literacy culture at SMA Negeri 3 Surakarta. This type of research is qualitative with an ethnographic design. The sources of this study were the principal, vice principal, teachers and students. Data collection techniques used were documentation and interviews. The validity of the data in this study used triangulation of sources. The results showed that: (1) The implementation of strengthening character education shows that there are character values that are formed among them, religious, nationalist, independent, integrity and mutual cooperation. These values are manifested through intraculricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The activities include: morning literacy, book corner, literacy Friday, taqwa Friday, the uses of libraries, literacy activities in learning, dhuhur in congregation, reading and writing al-qur’an (BTA) activities, flag ceremonies and parcipating in scout and paskibra organization activities. (2) Obstacles from students who are lazy and lack self-awareness in carrying out activities, and limited costs to support literacy culture activities. (3) Solutions for students who are lazy and lack self-awareness by providing various activities so that students are not bored and bored, while the solution for limited costs is to support literacy culture activities by involving alumni and outsiders.
