Abstract

Critical thinking skills are crusial for students when understand the information to generate ideas in problem solving. Not only requires critical thinking skills, but also needs Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This study aimed to analyze the critical thinking skills of junior high school students in solving HOTS problems in terms of the cognitive styles Field Independent and Field Dependent. This type of research was descriptive qualitative. The data collection techniques used were written tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques consisted of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data used technical triangulation, by comparing test data and interview data. The results showed that students with FD cognitive style were not able to meet all indicators of critical thinking, they only met indicators of focus, reason, situation, and clarity. They missed in conclusion and review indicators. Meanwhile, students with FI cognitive style fulfilled all indicators of critical thinking. Thus, students with the FI cognitive style had the critical thinking ability more optimally in solving HOTS problems than students with the FD cognitive style.
