Abstract

The word Jahiliyyah is at the center of the diversity of words in the Koran, there are at least 4 verses that mention it, namely in Surah Ali ‘Imra>n verse 154, Surah al-Ma>idah verse 50, Surah al-Ah{za>b verse 33 and Surat al-Fath{ verse 26. Because there are differences of conflicting opinions in the meaning of the word Jahiliyyah, such as the opinion of Jurji Zaidan and Moenawar Chalil who are histocal figures. Based on this background, this research study aims to find out how the Koran tell something related to the word Jahiliyyah. The book of Tafseer by Ibn Kathir was chosen as the study material because its form includes the Tafseer with the words of the prophet then his friend interpretation, its inclination to the authenticity of the tura>s\ and the author's original understanding in interpreting the verse this can maintain the authenticity of the Koran. This research uses an interpretive approach and the method of analysis is descriptive analysis. After going through a long process, we came to the conclusion that the word Jahiliyyah in Tafsi>r al-Qura>n al-'Az}i>m according to Ibn Kathir is a bad prediction of Allah's destiny, punishing with other laws on the law than Allah’s law establish, behaviors that leads to adultery and arrogant attitude of a fanatical person who closes the door to truth. If you pay attention to Ibn Kathir's interpretation of the word Jahiliyyah in the 4 verses and then match the theory used, it is found that Ibn Kathir's opinion regarding the word Jahiliyyah in the Koran is not ignorance which is part of the phase of time, but enters into a phase of attitude or action which consists of suspicion, rejection and arrogance of Allah s.w.t.’s decree which should be obeyed.
