Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between phubbing behavior and social interaction among students. The sample in this study was selected with the criteria for the presentage of smartphone ownership, namely the age group between 18 to 34 years, at which age the individual is undertaking a college education. Subjects taken were 95 students of the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta that uses quantitative methods. The data collection tool used is a scale measuring instrument. The scale used in this study is a phubbing scale and a social interaction scale. The scale was then analyzed by expert judgment, the results of the scale that were distributed were then analyzed by using the Pearson product moment test. The results of the analysis obtained show that phubbing behavior has no relationship with social interactions. Correlation coefficient (r) -0.079, p = 0.449 (p ≤ 0.01). The results of the study led to a significant negative between phubbing behavior and social interaction. Phubbing behavior that is not related to social interaction can be caused by many other factors that influence the social interaction process itself.
