Abstract
Introduction: School-age children are vulnerable to nutritional problems due to exposure to diseases and unhealthy living behaviors. On of the risks of unhealthy living behavior is obesity. The prevalence of obesity in Indonesia among children aged 5-12 years is 18.8%, 16% at the age of 13-15 years, and 13,5% at the age of 16-18 years old. Obesity can be caused by the intake of more carbohydrates that are not converted into energy for activity then stored as fat. The results of study on carbohydrate intake with the incidence of obesity in school age children were not consistent with the theory that carbohydrate intake was correlated to the incidence of obesity in school age children, therefore, a literature review was conducted. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the correlation between carbohydrate intake and obesity cases in school-age children. Method: This literature review used articles or journals from the google scholar and PubMed databases. Keywords used include school-age children, carbohydrate intake, and obesity. The limitations applied in this literature review are full text articles, Indonesian or English, publication period of 2011 to 2020, types of research applied cross sectional study, journals selected were nationally reputable journal articles by Sinta (S2-S3) and internationally by Scimagolab (Q1-Q4). Result: from five study have been selected, the percentage of school-age children who suffered obesity case varied from 20,6% to 55%. Four articles that were reviewed stated that there was a correlation between carbohydrate intake and obesity in school-age children with p value was between 0.001 - 0.004. One article stated that there was no correlation between carbohydrate intake and obesity in school age children with p value of 0.074. School children who were obese had higher carbohydrate intake than school children who are not obese. Conclusion: There was a correlation between carbohydrate intake with obesity in school-age children.
