Abstract
This research was conducted to investigate the effect of variations in the holding time of tempering on the hardness and mirco structure of ST 60 carbon steel in the tempering process. Tempering process is widely used to increase the surface hardness of steel and having a ductility. In this study, the variations of holding time were 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours. In this study, the carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 900° C with a holding time of 1 hour and quenchd by the water. Then, tempered at a temperature of 300° C in the variations 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours. The results of this study indicate that the variation in the holding time 30 minutes has an average hardness of 47.6 HRC. In 1 hour the average hardness value is 44.83 HRC. Then in 2 hours the average hardness value is 43.93 HRC and in 3 hours is 42.87 HRC. The raw material has an average hardness value of 66.7 HRB. So the raw material after carburizing experienced an increase in hardness by 357-46%. Thus the holding time of tempering process affects the hardness of the material.
