Abstract

This study aims to describe: 1) students speaking skills. 2) factors that affect the low level of speaking skills. 3) solutions to overcome low speaking skills. This type of research is qualitative research. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants in this study were the principal, teachers, and class V students. The validity of the data was obtained through triangulation of sources and triangulation of techniques. The results showed that: 1) the speaking skills of grade V students are in the sufficient category because at the stage of physical and psychological development that is not optimal and students are also not used to using Indonesian when communicating. 2) factors that influence the low level of speaking skills are internal and external factors. Internal factors include family, student and regional factors, while external factors include environment, teachers, and infrastructure. 3) solutions to overcome low speaking skills, namely: using training methods to accustom students to practice speaking skills, providing motivation, providing ice breaking, using role playing methods, and implementing learning media.
