Abstract
Until now the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased among the population of children and adolescents around the world, one of the causes is skipping breakfast frequently. The purpose of this study was to find out the correlation between breakfast habits with nutritional status in children aged 5-18 years. The study used narative review methods in 5-18 years old children who often skipped breakfast related to nutritional status which was conducted through pubmed searches in the last 10 years starting from January 2011. The age filters of the subject were child and adolescent, all papers were free of charge and in English. The selected study was a cross sectional study and should provide data on breakfast habits in children aged 5-18 years and data on the relationship of breakfast habits with nutritional status. Based on five studies reviewed stated that children and adolescents who often skipped breakfast were associated with overweight (obese) evidenced by a p value of ≤0.05. The role of parents and schools was very important in teaching students to get used to breakfast in preventing the increased prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents. As well as the quality of breakfast it was necessary to be able to make an optimal contribution to the nutritional status of the child and the adolescent.
