Abstract
Introduction: The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has increased rapidly in the last few decades. Obesity that occurs during adolescence can have an impact on increasing the morbidity of non-communicable diseases, so it is necessary to prevent obesity from an early age by controlling obesity risk factors. Several studies have shown that adolescents with high screen time duration can exacerbate the risk of being overweight / obesity due to lack of physical activity and tend to choose high-calorie foods. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between screen time and nutritional status in children aged 6-18 years. Methods: This research study was a narrative review through journal searches using the PubMed journal site. The selected journals were in English, in full text format and publication for the last 10 years starting in January 2011. The selected study was cross-sectional, providing screen time data and data on children's nutritional status, and data on the relation between screen time and nutritional status of children aged 6-18 years. Result: The results of the research from the five journals showed that there was a significant correlation between screen time and nutritional status in children aged 6-18 years. This was evidenced by the value of p ≤0.05. Conclusion: Screen time activity in children aged 6 - 18 years for > 2 hours / day increases the risk of overweight / obesity. Suggestion: It was expected that children and adolescents can set a screen time duration of less than 2 hours and maintain normal nutritional status by adjusting diet and physical activity. The role of parents was very necessary in directing children and adolescents in the use of time in front of the screen both for doing assignments and just for entertainment.
