Abstract

Altruistic behavior is voluntary helping behavior that is initiated with the view that every human being has a moral responsibility to others. This study aims to (1) examine the relationship between empathy and altruistic behavior in students, (2) to measure altruistic behavior students in terms of gender. The research subjects were male and female students at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, who are less than 18 to 24 years of age. Sampling using random sampling technique with data aids, namely the scale of empathy and altruistic behavior scale. The data analysis used product moment, while the comparative analysis used the t-test with the SPPS for windows program. Based on the results of data analysis the coefficient value coefficient (rxy) 0.414 with sig. (p) of 0.000 (p <0.01), which means that there is a very significant relationship between empathy and altruistic behavior in students. The correlation is positive so that the higher the empathy for students, the higher the altruistic behavior will be. The result of t-test analysis was 0.187 with sig. (p), namely 0.82 (p> 0.05), which means that there is no altruistic behavior in students based on gender.
