Abstract

Suicide trend increasesrapidly worldwide, including in Indonesia. In Indonesia, suicide ranks second in young death causes, ranging from 15 to 29 years old, including of university students. This study aims to determine the types of problems faced by students and the contribution to the emergence of suicide ideas. This is a qualitative phenomenological research. Data collection techniques is semi-structured interviews and the analysis technique used is thematic analysis. Subjects are eight students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), who experienced the idea of suicide. The results of this study indicate that health problems, psychological disorder, family, sexual harassment, juvenile delinquency, friendship problems, economic, academic, and personality problems are problems that can trigger suicidal ideas in students. The idea of suicide in students is an important issue that must get attention. Problems that are not handled properly will lead to suicidal ideas. This study states that coping strategies and barriers to seeking help have contributed to the problem of generating suicidal ideation. Most of the strategies used by the participants did not match the problems at hand.
