Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of the number a children of rubber farmers who have dropped out of school in Belitang MadangRaya District, East OKU Regency, South Sumatra. This happens because of the influence of parents' income on the child's education level. The purpose of this study is to examine the income of rubber farmers and to analyze the effect of income of rubber farmers in the Belitang Madang Raya District. This study used a survey method. A sample of 87 was taken using a non-probability method and the sample has certain characteristics, namely parents who work as rubber farmers whose children do not continue with higher education. Data collection techniques included a questionnaire instrument which was used to determine whether parents' income had an effect on children's education levels, direct interviews to strengthen data such as rubber prices, and documentation to show social and environmental conditions in the research location. Data processing using SPSS using cross tabulation formula and Chi-Square test, then data analysis using quantitative descriptive method, spatial interaction analysis, and cross tabulation analysis with Chi-Square test. This study shows the results that the majority of rubber farmers' income is included in the medium group with an average monthly income of IDR 1,600,000. So, of the 87 rubber farmers sampled in the three research villages, it was stated that respondents with an income below Rp. 1,500,000 or low class were 34 respondents with a percentage of 39.1%, income above Rp. 1,500,000 or the middle class numbered 43 respondents with a percentage of 49.4%, and income above Rp. 2,500,000 or the high group amounted to 10 respondents with a percentage of 11.5% this was due to the low price of rubber. The next result is that there is no significant effect on parents' income on children's education, this is evidenced by data testing using the Chi-Square test on SPSS. This is also evidenced by the results of the questionnaire questions which show that children are less motivated to continue higher education. So it can be concluded that there is a lack of understanding of the importance of education in children themselves.
