Abstract
The problem of the urban environment that is most felt is air pollution and it results in climate resilience where the amount of oxygen production (O₂) decreases and the abundance of carbon dioxide (CO₂) production. Surakarta is the city with the highest population density in Central Java Province. However, the availability of green land, namely urban forest, which functions as a CO₂ absorber in suppressing and reducing air pollution in cities is reduced every year and is replaced by built-up land. The objectives of this study were: 1) to analyze the availability and need of urban forest area based on the ability to absorb CO₂; 2) identifying potential locations (land) to be developed as urban forest. Two analysis methods are used, namely: 1) analysis of urban forest area needs with the approach to absorbing CO₂ generated from population parameters and motor vehicles; 2) spatial data analysis using remote sensing approach. This process is to perform a visual interpretation using the on screen digitization method through digitizing the GeoEye-1 image. The results showed: 1) the required area of urban forest in Surakarta City in 2019 is 3,983 ha. The availability of urban forest is 107.76 ha. So that the lack of urban forest area based on the ability to absorb CO₂ in that area is 3,771.86 ha; 2) Obtained 105 land blocks with a total potential land area of 117.96 ha in which all sub-districts in Surakarta City have the potential to be developed as urban forest. Jebres Subdistrict has a large potential land area, while Pasar Kliwon Subdistrict has a small potential land area.
