Abstract
This research is a psycholinguistic study of the speech errors produced by main characters in Finding Nemo movie. The objectives of this study are: 1) to identify the types of speech errors produced by the main characters in Finding Nemo movie, 2) to describe the highest frequency of types of speech errors produced by the main characters in Finding Nemo movie, 3) to describe the causes of speech errors produced by the main characters in Finding Nemo movie, and 4) to describe the highest frequency of the causes of speech errors produced by the main characters in Finding Nemo movie. This research employs a descriptive qualitative research. The data sources of this study are the script and the original VCDs of Finding Nemo. The data are in the form of phrases, clauses, or sentences contained speech errors in the dialogues of the movie. The instruments of this research are the VCD of the movie, the script of the movie, and the data sheets. The findings of this research show that there are 203 data of speech errors produced by main characters in Finding Nemo movie. The speech errors are divided into two types, i.e. Non-Fluency/NF (197 or 97.05 %) and Slip of the Tongue (6 0r 2.95 %). In relation to Non-Fluencies, there are five types of Non-Fluency, i.e. Repetition (Rpt), False Start (FS), Pause (P), Correction (C), and Stutter (St). There are 197 (97.05 %) data of NF, in which there are 57 (28.07 %) data of Rpt, 3 (1.47 %) data of FS, 10 (4.92 %) data of Cr, 18 (8.86 %) data of St, and 109 (53.69 %) data of P which comprises 22 (10.84 %) data of Silent Pauses/SP and 87 ( 42.85 %) data of Filled Pauses/FP. In relation to SoT, there are seven types of SoT, i.e. Anticipation/Ant, Perseveration/Pers, Reversals/Rev, Blends/Bl, Haplologies/Hap, Misderivations/Misd, and Words Subtitutions/WsSb. There are 6 data of SoT or 2.95 % of speech errors which all of them are included in type of Rev. Pauses (P) which consist of SP and FP has the highest frequency of occurrence in Finding Nemo. There are two causes of speech errors, i.e. Cognitive Difficulty (CD) and Social Factor (SF). Among the 203 data of speech errors found in Finding Nemo, 81 data or 39.9 % of them are caused by CD. In fact, 75 of the data are obtained from Dory who suffers Anomic Aphasia. Meanwhile, 122 data or 60.1 % of them are caused by SF which consists of 66 or 32.51 % items of Situational Anxiety (SA) and 56 27.59 % items of Social Circumstance (SC). In this sense, speech errors caused by Cognitive Difficulty (CD) have the highest frequency of occurrence in Finding Nemo.
